by Bradley TorreanoBrothers Ellis and Tom Clark had worked together for years before forming Epicycle in the late '90s. Crafting a sound that applied emo rock's dynamics, poppy melodies, and a freedom to utilize a variety of instruments not often associated with alternative rock, Epicycle's debut turned heads upon its release in 1998. Instead of following it up, the band decided to work on a few other artist's records instead. First came Kevin Tihista's Don't Breathe a Word and Judo, in which the brothers produced and performed most of the backing tracks. Next was a collaboration with Nikki Sudden, which bled into another collaboration with Jeff Tweedy that ended up on Sudden's album as well. Finally, Ellis worked with the Chamber Strings and June & the Exit Wounds before returning to his brother for a new batch of songs. Jumping back into the studio in the spring of 2002, Swift was recorded in the following months and released in the fall of that year.
