Wenzel debuted as a soloist in 1986 with the LP Die with me a piece of that shortly thereafter got the GDR Schallplattenpreis Golden Amiga for Chanson. On this LP and some following albums (especially song on the edge and four clock morning) he attended as an interpreter of songs Theodor Kramer for attention. In 2002 he was (again) awarded the German cabaret prize for his translations and interpretations of the work of the folk singer Woody Guthrie. He is a member of PEN Center Germany.
