He started writing songs when he was 12 years old. After high school, he spent a year touring in the US and Canada playing shows in prisons before heading to Nashville to attend university. After graduation, he signed with Combustion Music and traveled through Spain, Italy and France where he wrote many of the songs that would become his debut album.
