Karin Plato grew up on the prairies in a small farming community called Alsask in the province of Saskatchewan. She studied the piano throughout her childhood. She later attended the University of Saskatchewan where she received her Bachelor of Music Degree in piano and voice. In 1985 she moved to Vancouver to study jazz and arranging at Capilano College. In 1996 and 1998 she studied vocal jazz at the Banff Centre For The Fine Arts with vocalists Sheila Jordan and Jay Clayton.\nIn the late 1990s Karin seriously began to pursue a career as a jazz vocalist and composer. She began to appear in Vancouver jazz clubs performing a repertoire of jazz standards and originals and started performing in jazz festivals and concerts in BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan.\nKarin recorded her first album of jazz standards and originals in 1996 on a recording called Pastiche. In 1998 she recorded Theres Beauty in the Rain for which she was nominated for a Juno award. (2000 Juno Awards) In the winter of 2000 Karin released two new recordings: Blue Again; a collection of duets; and Snowflake Season; a jazz\u002FChristmas recording. In 2003 she released her fifth album The State of Bliss which features a guest appearance by Canadian vocalist Denzal Sinclaire on two duets.\nBrief Facts about Karin\nIn 2003 and 2004 she was nominated Canadian Jazz Vocalist of the Year at The National Jazz Awards.\nIn 2004 she was nominated for a West Coast Music Award for her CD The State Of Bliss.\nIn 2000 she was nominated for a Juno Award for her recording Theres Beauty In The Rain.\nShe toured across Canada in 2001 in support of her current CD release Blue Again.\nShe composed and arranged music for concerts at The Vancouver East Cultural Centre (The April Arrangement) and at The Capilano College Theatre in North Vancouver. (Festive Jazz). She arranged the songs of Rodgers and Hart for a show presented in Vancouver at The Jazz Cellar (The Songs of Rogers and Hart).\nAppeared in concert with Kate Hammett-Vaughan at The Vancouver East Cultural Centre in 2002 as part of Jazz Festival Vancouver.\nHas performed at festivals and in concerts across Canada including Vancouver, Edmonton, Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Toronto, Kingston, Ottawa and Montreal.\nIn the Yukon she has performed in Whitehorse in the Jazz On The Wing concert series. (2001)\nIn BC she has sung at The duMaurier Jazz Festival International Vancouver, The Harmony Arts Festival, The Maple Ridge Jazz & Blues Festival, The Mission Hill Jazz Festival, The Gibsons Landing Jazz Festival, Pender Harbour Concert Society, The Quesnel Concert Society and for The Whiterock Arts Council.\nIn Alberta she performed at The Jasper Festival of Music & Wine (2001) and for the Edmonton Jazz Society (2000)\nIn Saskatchewan she performed at The Sasktel Jazz Festival in Saskatoon (2000) and for the Regina Jazz Society (1999 and 2001) and in 2003 for CBC Reginas "Holiday Soiree".\nIn Quebec she performed as part of the concert series "Silence On Jazz" in Montreal.\nPast highlight performances include opening up for pianist Brad Meldau (Saskatoon 2000), opening up for Peter Appleyard (Vancouver 2000) and singing in "Divas For Life" concerts in 2001 and 2002.\nShe performed with Denzal Sinclaire at The Vancouver East Cultural Centre. (2003)\nCBC radio 690 AM aired one of her Vancouver concerts on a program called HOT AIR (1998)\nCBC recorded and aired a concert performed in Saskatoon on JAZZBEAT (2000)\nHer concert in Montreal 2001 at Le Maison De Le Culture Frontenac was recorded and broadcast on Radio Canada and on the program Silence en Jazz on CBC Radio. (2001)\nIn 2004 she appeared as one of the feature vocalists in the Vocal Jazz Series at The Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto which was broadcast nationally on CBC radio.\nHas performed live on CBCs North by Northwest and been featured on Sounds Like Canada.\nHas appeared on the television show Urban Rush (Shaw) and on VTV Breakfast (CTV)\nHas been a guest on the radio show Richardsons Roundup on CBC, Martini Madness on AM 1040, on One OClock Jump on 102.7 FM in Vancouver and on Dals Place on AM 600.\nHas appeared on BRAVO TV in feature about Divas For Life.
