It has taken DJ GI Joe many years to find himself where he is today. He has toured the world and rocked\r\nfor thousands of people on four continents. He is known not only as a DJ but also as a bboy, doing his\r\nbest to keep hip hop alive and thriving. Clearly hip hop is a large force in his life, but many may not know\r\nthat his fascination with music almost prevented him from being able to do what he loves.\r\nBorn in Manhattan, DJ GI Joe grew up in Alphabet City. One of his earliest memories there is reaching for\r\na crate of records up on a table. Joe fell off the chair he was standing on and broke his arm. The break\r\nwas so severe doctors recommended his arm be amputated. However, his grandmother was not about\r\nto let her grandson’s arm get cut off and took him to a different hospital. Fortunately, they repaired his\r\narm via surgery. A scar remains – a chilling reminder of how different his life could have been.\r\nAlthough it’s a mystery what records were in that crate, Joe was definitely exposed to Latin American\r\nmusic growing up with his Puerto Rican grandparents. Since rap was just starting to hit the scene in the\r\n80’s, his love for rap and hip hop mainly grew when he started watching Def Comedy Jam, featuring Kid\r\nCapri as a DJ. At the end of each episode, Kid Capri would DJ and a bunch of people would dance. This\r\nwas a major inspiration for Joe, and he started to realize that he wanted to dance and DJ himself.\r\nDancing came first, because it was more affordable. DJ equipment was expensive, and money wasn’t\r\ncoming easily. While Joe was starting out as a bboy, his family was moving. His mother, pregnant with\r\nJoe’s little sister, wanted to get away from the drugs and negativity in Alphabet City. Joe’s family
