The roots of the band begin way back in 1999, when Ste and Stuart Bates started playing guitar together. Stuart was replaced by his brother Mike, then around 2003 Ste and Stuart decided to form a full band, and recruited Damian Gregory on bass. \n \nAfter 2 years of this lineup, Mike had to leave for university, and so a search for a new guitarist began. Sam Greig was known to most of the band from back in school, and he eventually joined as guitarist.\n \nAfter practicing together for a while under the name Ascension, the band went on somewhat of a hiatus while members were involved with other projects, but Sam Ste and Damian would eventually reform as Ethereal Logic. Around 2008, Jim joined the band, and the 4 members wrote and practiced around an hour of new material.\n \nIn 2009, the band began the long process of writing and recording what would eventually become Opus Machina. During this time, Damian left the band. The remaining members tried out several musicians to play bass and drums, but struggled to find more permanent replacements. In the end, Ste Jim and Sam covered all the parts themselves, and the album was finally completed in late 2013.
