Conductor Marika Kuzma has gained recognition in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond as a choral director of unusual versatility and high standards. She has directed choirs across North America, including the St. Lawrence Choir, the Handel Society of Dartmouth College, the University of Virginia Singers, the Oakland Symphony Chorus, and her several choirs at the University of California, Berkeley. In the current 2012-13 season, she has been invited to prepare choirs for concerts with the Philharmonia Orchestra of London under Esa-Pekka Salonen and with the Simon Bolivar Orchestra of Caracas under Gustavo Dudamel. In the 2010-11 season, she was invited to conduct Morton Feldman's Rothko Chapel with the Abel-Steinberg-Winant Trio and to prepare the chorus for James MacMillan Seven Last Words with the Berkeley Symphony under Joana Carneiro. In the 2007-08 season, she was invited to be the chef de choeur for the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal under Maestro Kent Nagano, preparing works by Bach, Beethoven, Bellini, Debussy, Ravel, Verdi, and Wagner. The OSM invited her again for a guest engagement (Bach St. Matthew Passion) in 2008-09.  Earlier seasons included numerous collaborations with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra under Nicholas McGegan and Jane Glover in productions with the Mark Morris Dance Group.\n \nKuzma’s work with choirs and orchestras is informed by her study as a solo singer-actor and her study of the violin—artsong, chamber music, theater productions—from an early age. Her ensembles have been praised for their beauty of sound, clear diction, true intonation, and particularly for their subtlety of color and phrasing. Along with choral conducting, she studied orchestral conducting with Gustav Meier, Mendi Rodan, and with Paul Vermel as an orchestral conducting fellow at the Aspen Festival. She occasionally performs as a singer and has occasionally guest conducted instrumental ensembles such as Earplay, Composers Inc., the National Orchestra of Ukraine, the UC Berkeley Symphony, and the Berkeley Symphony.\n \nIn the realm of Early Music, Kuzma has directed the Collegium at the Amherst Early Music Festival and led a “chant-along” at Grace Cathedral for the San Francisco Early Music Society. While still an undergraduate, she was influenced by Baroque musicians Elaine Scott Banks and Richard Luby, later studied performance practice at Stanford University, and served as an assistant to the renowned medieval music interpreter Thomas Binkley while completing her doctorate at Indiana University. With the UC Berkeley Chamber Chorus, she has directed performances of the medieval Carmina Burana, the Dufay Missa Ave regina celorum (recording on Sanglier records), the Monteverdi Vespers, and numerous works by Handel and Bach with Baroque orchestras. In the standard choral-orchestral repertoire, she has conducted the Haydn Creation, Mozart C minor Mass and Requiem, Brahms Ein deutsches Requiem, Verdi Requiem, Fauré Requiem, Stravinsky Svadebka (Les Noces), Britten War Requiem, Feldman Rothko Chapel, Harrison La Koro Sutro, and Reich Tehillim, among many others. In more contemporary music, she has conducted premieres of works by Karchin, Reich (West Coast premiere of Proverb), Rockmaker, Rzewski, and Takemitsu (American premiere of Gemeaux, a piece for double-orchestra that she co-conducted with Kent Nagano). She has also premiered works by her composer colleagues at UC Berkeley: Brian Current (Inventions on Et in terra pax) Jorge Liderman (Song of Songs and Sephardisms II), John Thow (Cantico), Jen Wang (Sanctus).\n \nOf Ukrainian descent, Ms. Kuzma grew up bilingual Ukrainian-English in an Italian-Irish neighborhood. She loves exploring various cultures and speaks several languages. Her special affinity for Eastern European choral music has led to a deep exploration of music of that repertoire. She won the Julius Herford Prize from the American Choral Directors Association for her research in Slavic music, and she has published articles and given talks on the topic internationally. Her edition of the choral concertos of Dmitry Bortniansky as well as a recording of the concertos are forthcoming.
