South Carolina native and Southern-bred Thomas McGuire traces his musical beginnings back to his early childhood, when his mother required him to take piano lessons as a young boy. At this stage in life, Thomas dedicated his time to sports and gave little notice to music and piano, finding his lessons to be so monotonous that his mother eventually consented to his constant complaints and allowed him to quit in the fifth grade. A few years passed without much attention given to music until he attended a Switchfoot concert in 2007, which lit a fire and passion for music within him and inspired one particular item included on his Christmas list later that year—his first guitar. \nAfter honing his basic guitar skills for a couple of years, Thomas then turned his attention to songwriting. He often felt that his covers of popular songs never did the originals justice, so he took to songwriting as his opportunity and excuse to create from his imagination and escape his mediocre attempts at legendary songs. “I remember during my beginning stages trying to learn some Dave Matthews song for a solid three weeks and not getting anywhere on it. I was so frustrated I eventually said to myself, ‘Screw this…I’ll just make my own!’” And so he did. \nThomas’ first step towards thinking seriously about a musical career came in 2011 when he attended The American Legion-sponsored Palmetto Boys State in Anderson, SC. During his week at Boys State, Thomas competed with a number of fellow rising seniors to secure a spot in the end of the week talent show, which he was awarded. He performed one of his originals for a crowd of a thousand people and received such good feedback that he decided to professionally record the song later that summer. \nTeaming with producer Kenny McWilliams of Archer Avenue Studio in Columbia, SC, Thomas recorded his first ever single, “More Than Just A Little Bit,” and later a six-track EP, Head, Heart & The In-Between during the summer of 2012. \nThomas approached his debut EP, Head, Heart & The In-Between from a variety of angles, aiming to capture the truth, innocence, nostalgia, and beauty of youth. Dominated by themes of love, hope, and redemption, Thomas’ EP is one that he hopes will inspire listeners both lyrically and musically. From the upbeat love song to the soul-searching anthem, he experiments with a variety of lyrical concepts and musical styles—perhaps influenced by his wide-ranging interests in artists from Coldplay to Jack Johnson. \nStill in his freshman year at The Citadel in Charleston, SC, Thomas believes that his career has only just begun. “As special as the songs on the EP are to me, my best songs are still yet to come. It’s like the lyrical story already exists, I just have to uncover the right melody to solve the puzzle. And for as long as people want to know what that puzzle looks like, or sounds like in my case, I will forever be a musician.”
