简介:
The Holiwater Project returns to the Splore Festival next year, after first performing at the festival in 2002. A collective of artists from UK, India and New Zealand, the band blends classical Indian composition with lush, ambient grooves in a contemporary style. It is a meeting of ancient and modern sounds courtesy of a collaboration between internationally renowned Vikash Maharaj, master of the Sarod, and pop\u002Fdub master UK based Tom Bailey of International Observer and Thomson Twins fame.\nVikash Maharaj comes from a family who has a very long line of musicians dating back over 500 years. Accompanying on the tabla is his son Prabhash Maharaj, a highly awarded tabla player and on percussion is Auckland percussionist James Pinker. Prabhash plays tabla with a wit and skill that creates an on stage presence as a unique complement to his fathers Sarod.\nThe Holiwater Band is an offshoot of the Holiwater Project, which is dedicated to the spirit of the holy Ganges River of Varanasi, India, a project which was initiated by Auckland photographer and video artist Andrei Jewell.\nThe project brings together film, music and performance with the ultimate goal of focusing attention to the sustainable management of water.\nWith the help of Andrei Jewell the band first performed in an old river boat in Varanasi in 2000 on World Water Day.\nAfter the release of their first album last year titled Holiwater, the band is working on the release of second Album, Maya, next year. The new album produced by Tom Bailey was recorded in Varanasi with the drums and percussion recorded in New Zealand and the mastering done in France.\nTheir Splore performance will feature music from their forthcoming new album.\nMaya literally means illusion” or “that which is not”, so expect music which will transform you in the world of mystery, which we may see, hear, and feel, but not fully understand. The band will play two sets over the Splore weekend.
