Johnson's latest album, "Perfect View," continues the narrative that began on "Annabella," and is her most intimate work to date. With guest appearances by Lucy Wainwright-Roche, Garland Jeffreys, and Carrie Johnson, the album was produced by Libby with Daniel Wise, mixed and mastered by Daniel Malsch at Soundmine Studios in Pennsylvania, the album will be in stores January, 2010, and is on iTunes on October 22, 2009.In the 90s band 22 Brides, Libby Johnson and her sister Carrie flitted between sincere, Lilith Fair-esque folk and a harder-edged, quasi-punk yet melodic onslaught that brought a considerable amount of attention to the band. On her debut solo album, Annabella, Libby broke out and forged a more intimate, individualistic blend that allowed her songs and stylistic wanderings more room to breathe. On "Annabella, playing piano and guitars, and backed by a fine crew including the great drummer, Steve Jordan, Johnson often turns here to a soulful, intimate approach that accents her intimate lyrics without overwhelming them. "Undone" pulls out tentatively, Johnson employing a soft, breathy, multi-tracked voice that gradually swells in intensity - with the band following suit - as she unravels her tale of a disintigrating life. "Don't Mean You Lost Your Love," the driving opening track, builds around a looping, broad-stroked electric guitar riff that hooks from the first notes. But in order to keep things monotony-free, Johnson gets gritty with the hushed blues "Mi La Vie," dabbles in country in the metaphoric "Rain," and displays a placid state on ballads such as "Under The Gate," and the earnest "Another Life," with it's rich pianstry. Four of the songs from "Annabella" found their way into the engaging film "Trust The Man," written and directed by Bart Freundlich, starring Julianne Moore.Johnson's early years were spent in a musical environment -- a folk-singing, guitar playing mother and a father who was an active and enthusiastic bagpiper -- "music has always been a big part of our family life," she notes, "our mother taught us guitar and we all played and sang together, something that we always still do when our family gets together."The family moved from the U.S. to Nairobi, Kenya when Johnson was 13 after her father was offered a job there. "Living in Africa had an enormous impact on my life, both musically and personally," she says, adding "I played my first live gig in a pub on the outskirts of Nairobi, and I can still remember that feeling of being on a stage for the first time, singing, playing, and thinking ...this is cool..."Some years later, back in the states, Johnson was writing, recording, playing in various bands, studying piano, and had moved to New York where she made a living playing jazz standards and doing session work on other artists' albums. "I was juggling a lot of different musical experiences," she says, "playing these piano bars at night and doing session work on other artists' albums, writing and playing gigs at CBs with my band (the punk\u002Fpop) "Mood Elevators," but what I really wanted to do was to get the chance to record my own songs in my own way.""Shortly after I moved to New York," she continues, "my sister Carrie moved here as well and joined the me in the band for awhile. She played guitar, I played keyboards, and we both sang. After that band broke up, we decided to put our songs together and just do some gigs, for fun."The result was 22 Brides. Critically-acclaimed for their blend of sixties-pop, swirling folk harmonies, and haunting lyrics, 22 Brides released three well-received albums (“22 Brides”, “Beaker”, and “Demolition Day” on the Zero Hour and Universal labels and spent the 90s on the road touring."Perfect View" is number five in Johnson's discography. Her songs have had numerous placements in film and television and have been featured on World Cafe, XM Cafe and XM Loft.
