Fundamentally any folk music can not be a planed art. It appeared as a sacral action, which accompanied rituals.\nAnd often it was an immediate tool for their accomplishment. Rituals formed spontaneously under the influence of outer factors and, also, the inner state of the people.\nThus the tradition was formed, including the Slavonic one. We – TUMULUS, don’t try to recreate Slavonic rituals. We just reflect them thru the prism of our feelings and emotions in the way they were possibly formed in the past (of course with an amendment for our wish to combine folk music with progressive metal and rock, ambient, and other elements). \nDon’t try to find strong musical and poetical rules of composition in our music. We don’t want to go by a treaded path. We create the new one – TUMULUS PATH, based on Slavonic traditions.\nIn native Russian folk pagan faith you can’t find that harmonious picture of mutual relations between gods and spirits, as in Greek and European mythology. One of the reasons is the history of the eastern and north Slavs, migrating almost all the time. As the result the leading role in Slavonic culture belongs to the domestic magic with its complex structure of multilayer worlds, populated with the spirits of nature and home hearth. These factors determined the preservation of verbal traditions with out of the system processing into literary language (in distinction from, for example, German and Greek ones).\nAs the result the strength of verbal tradition is in THE WORD, which is pronounced ALOUD and has a sacral, magical meaning. More often it is firstly the spell, the word formula meant to affect someone (if we consider natural phenomenon & objects to be animated).\nTHE WORD written doesn’t have that emotional meaning, always put in by the singer, the narrator or the conjurer (often the one and the same person). Also THE WORD loses it’s emotional & magical meaning without the music providing it. In ancient times it was the sounds of the wind, the forest, the river, the sound of shaman’s bodhran and the crackling of the torch. In TUMULUS – it’s our music. And THE WORD is our lyrics.
